Spending time with your kids these school holidays
With school holidays only a couple of days away, it’s time to start brainstorming ideas for spending time with the kids and keeping them entertained for the next couple of weeks. However, these ideas become less appealing as children quickly grow into teenagers who much prefer to spend their holidays with friends or in their room alone.
While this can seem disheartening at times, kids can still be easily persuaded if these holiday activities are to their liking. So take some time to find out what they do in their spare time and what the latest trends are among their friends to come up with ideas that they will also love.
At Edstart, we’ve come up with some suggestions on ways to make the most out of this limited time with our children.
Take them to the movies
Any kid will jump at the chance of watching the latest movies without having to pay for the movie ticket. Treat them to a dinner before to squeeze in some more quality time. If they just want to stay home, renting or downloading a movie is a simple replacement that can still grab their attention for a couple of hours.Go on a family hike
Teenagers are starting to follow the trend of exercising and keeping fit, especially since the beach season is approaching. Make time on the weekend when everyone is free to go on a long walk for the whole family to enjoy the scenery, get their daily exercise in and hopefully have some one-on-one conversations with your children.Go out for breakfast
While this may seem quite generic, many teens are heading out to Sydney’s cafes that are renowned for their breakfast and aesthetically pleasing interiors. So take some time in the morning to take them to a café of their choice for some good food and great pictures. You may be playing their photographer for a couple of minutes, but it is still an opportunity to sit down and catch up with your kids.Head to the beach
Sunny days and hot weather are already upon us, so it might be fun to take your kids to the beach to relax as a family. Some kids tend to get embarrassed if they’re seen outside with their parents. If they still haven’t passed that phase, there are still a multitude of secluded beaches that can’t be accessed by teens that haven’t got their Learners yet.Tag along if they want to go shopping
Window shopping will still do, as long as it means time with your daughter or son to chat and also observe what they like for future reference. You can even offer to accompany them to Officeworks, because while school is often the last thing in the kid’s minds during the holidays, they always get a little excited for a new term if it means new school supplies.
These activities may sound quite simple and not as creative and extravagant as what Google suggests, but that’s what makes them appealing to all parents and kids. You don’t have to organise a cooking class or take them to an amusement park to entertain your kids and spend quality time. From an hour or less having breakfast to a couple of hours on a walk, these suggestions can help kids and parents balance time together and time with friends.
